TYRE FAQSTIPS & ADVICE

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions from our customers:

General Tyre Questions

Choosing the right tyres is essential for safety, performance, and fuel efficiency. At Tyrepower, we make it easy with our online search tools and expert advice.

Find Your Tyre Size

To get an accurate quote and the right fit, it’s important to know your tyre size. The easiest way to find this is by checking the sidewall of your existing tyre, where you’ll see a combination of numbers and letters.

Understanding Tyre Size Markings:

  • Width – The first number (e.g., 225) represents the width of the tyre in millimetres.
  • Profile (Aspect Ratio) – The second number (e.g., 55) shows the sidewall height as a percentage of the width.
  • Rim Size – The “R” followed by a number (e.g., R17) indicates the diameter of the wheel rim in inches.

Important Tip: Some vehicles have different front and rear tyre sizes, so be sure to check both tyres when taking note of your tyre size.

Space saver tyres are temporary spare tyres designed to save space and weight in your vehicle. They are smaller and narrower than standard tyres and are meant to be used only in emergencies when you have a flat tyre.

Key Points About Space Saver Tyres:

  • Temporary use only – Not designed for long distances or high speeds.
  • Speed limit – Most space saver tyres have a maximum speed limit of 80km/h (check your tyre for specific guidance).
  • Reduced grip & handling – Due to their smaller size, they provide less traction and can affect braking and handling.
  • Replace as soon as possible – A space saver should be used only to get to a tyre repair shop or a safe location.

Which Vehicles Use Space Saver Tyres?

Space saver tyres are commonly found in smaller vehicles with limited boot space, as well as some larger modern cars where manufacturers prioritise weight reduction and fuel efficiency.

Smaller boot capacity – Compact cars and hatchbacks often use space savers to maximize luggage space. Weight reduction – A lighter spare tyre helps improve fuel efficiency. Better fuel economy & reduced emissions – Reducing vehicle weight contributes to lower CO₂ emissions. Manufacturing choice – Some car manufacturers provide space saver tyres as standard to meet design and efficiency goals.

Common Vehicle Types That Use Space Saver Tyres:

  • Small Cars & Hatchbacks – To save space in compact boots.
  • Sedans & Sports Cars – Some models include them to reduce weight.
  • Hybrid & Electric Vehicles – To offset the extra weight of batteries.
  • Some SUVs & Luxury Vehicles – Occasionally included for space and weight considerations.

Not sure if your vehicle has a space saver? Check your owner’s manual or visit a Tyrepower store for expert advice.

The speed rating indicates the maximum safe speed a tyre can handle. It’s marked on the tyre sidewall and should match your vehicle’s requirements

Tyre Maintenance & Safety

A simple way is using a 20-cent coin—if part of the number is visible when inserted into the tread, your tyres may need replacing. NZ’s legal minimum tread depth is 1.5mm.

Maintaining the correct tyre pressure is crucial for safety, fuel efficiency, and tyre lifespan. Here’s how to find the correct pressure for your vehicle and check your current tyre pressure.

How to Read Tyre Pressure on Your Tyre

Many tyres have markings on the sidewall that indicate the maximum inflation pressure (e.g., “MAX PRESSURE 50 PSI”). However, this is NOT the recommended pressure for your vehicle—it’s simply the maximum the tyre can safely handle.

NOTE:  Always follow your vehicle manufacturer’s recommended pressure, not the maximum on the tyre.

Where to Find Your Vehicle’s Recommended Tyre Pressure

Your car’s recommended tyre pressure can usually be found in one of these places:

  • Driver’s Side Door Frame – Check for a sticker inside the driver’s door jamb.
  • Owner’s Manual – Look under “Tyres” or “Tyre Pressure” in your car’s manual.
  • Fuel Filler Flap – Some vehicles have tyre pressure information inside the fuel cap.

Tyre pressure is usually listed in PSI (pounds per square inch) or BAR and may vary depending on whether the vehicle is fully loaded or driving conditions (e.g., motorway vs. city).

How to Check Your Tyre Pressure

You can check your tyre pressure using:

  • A Digital or Manual Tyre Pressure Gauge – Available at service stations and auto stores.
  • TPMS (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System) – Some modern vehicles have built-in sensors that alert you if tyre pressure is low.
  • At a Tyrepower Store – Our experts can check and adjust your tyre pressure for optimal performance.

When Should You Check Tyre Pressure?

  • At least once a month and before long trips.
  • When tyres are cold (before driving) for the most accurate reading.
  • After temperature changes, as colder weather can reduce pressure.

This could be due to unbalanced wheels, wheel misalignment, or worn-out suspension components. A balance and wheel alignment check can help diagnose the issue.

Tyre Replacement & Buying Advice

Tyres on electric vehicles (EVs) tend to wear out faster than those on petrol or diesel cars due to the unique characteristics of EVs. However, proper maintenance can extend their lifespan.

Factors That Affect EV Tyre Wear:

  • Increased Vehicle Weight – EVs are heavier due to battery packs, putting more strain on tyres.
  • Instant Torque – The rapid acceleration of EVs causes faster tread wear compared to conventional vehicles.
  • Regenerative Braking – This braking system shifts more wear to the front tyres, affecting longevity.
  • Tyre Type – Some EVs require specialised low-rolling-resistance tyres to improve efficiency.

Typical EV Tyre Lifespan

EV tyres generally last between 30,000 – 50,000 km, but this depends on:
  • Driving style – Aggressive acceleration and hard braking can shorten tyre life.
  • Road conditions – Rough surfaces and potholes increase tyre wear.
  • Tyre maintenance – Regular rotation, alignment, and correct tyre pressure help maximise longevity.

TIP: Many EV owners rotate tyres more frequently (every 8,000 – 10,000 km) to balance wear and extend lifespan. Need EV tyre advice? Visit your nearest Tyrepower store, or search for EV Tyres online

Tyre lifespan depends on driving habits, road conditions, and maintenance. Most tyres last between 40,000 – 80,000 km with proper care.

Tyre Fitting & Store-Specific Services

The cost of a tyre depends on several factors, including:

  • Tyre size – Larger or specialised tyres may cost more.
  • Brand & Quality – Budget, mid-range, and premium tyres have different price points.
  • Driving Needs – All-season, off-road, performance, and run-flat tyres vary in price.

At Tyrepower, we stock a wide range of tyres and work with all major brands to ensure we find the best option for your vehicle and budget. Visit your local Tyrepower store for expert advice and a tailored quote.

If you have a slow puncture, we may be able to repair it, but some punctures (especially near the sidewall) may require a full replacement. Visit your nearest Tyrepower for advice.

The cost of a puncture repair depends on:
  • Type of puncture – Small punctures in the tread can often be repaired, but damage to the sidewall usually requires a replacement.
  • Tyre condition – If the tyre is worn or near its legal limit, a replacement may be the safest option.

At Tyrepower, we always aim to repair where possible to save you money. Bring your vehicle into your local tyre shop, and our experts will assess your tyre and provide the best solution.

We stock all major tyre brands, but not all of them are online, if you can’t find a specific one, let us know—we may be able to source it for you!

As of 1st March 2024, the new National Tyrewise regulations came into effect, introducing a Tyre Stewardship Fee to manage the responsible disposal and recycling of end-of-life tyres in New Zealand.

This fee helps fund tyre recycling initiatives, reducing environmental impact and ensuring tyres are processed sustainably.
